ENSI reviewed the 6 siting areas proposed by NAGRA for low and intermediate level waste (L+ILW) and the 3 siting areas proposed for high level waste (HLW). ENSI considered all siting areas to be suitable and recommended that all should be considered further in Stage 2 of the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories.

Investigation of geological siting areas and specification for repositories Communes in the siting areas assume responsibility for organising and carrying out regional participation at the latest during Stage 2.  During the regional participation process, the communes represent regional interests and work in cooperation with federal authorities and waste producers.

In Stage 2, waste producers identify potential locations within the siting areas approved in Stage 1. They are required to take account of safety and technical feasibility, spatial planning requirements and economic/socio-economic aspects.
