Effects of earthquakes on nuclear installations (buildings, systems and components)
Earthquakes represent very significant natural hazards. Very powerful earthquakes constitute the most major contributor to core damage frequency in probabilistic safety analyses for Swiss nuclear power plants. Swiss research into how earthquakes arise and how seismic waves are propagated underground to the sites of nuclear installations has achieved a high standard that is continuously being expanded. This focus concerns the impact of seismic waves on buildings in nuclear installations and on the safety-relevant systems within these installations.
