Facilities in decommissioning

Proteus

Work on the PROTEUS research reactor at PSI.

The former research reactor Proteus was decommissioned in 2011. Between 2023 and 2025, PSI carried out work as part of dismantling phase 2, which was approved by ENSI. PSI completed dismantling phase 2 in 2025. PSI is now preparing for the final dismantling phase 3.

Diorit

View into the former reactor hall of the Diorit. The grid pattern on the staircase-shaped concrete foundation served as preparation for the demolition work that has been taking place since 2023.

The Diorit nuclear facility was decommissioned in 1977. Based on the demolition permit issued in 1994, the PSI has been carrying out dismantling work since 2023 as part of the approved fourth dismantling phase.

Saphir

View into the former reactor hall of the Saphir. The grids applied to the walls and floors are required for the clearance measurements.

The dismantling of the Saphir research reactor, which was decommissioned in 1994, is well advanced. Extensive measurements to verify that it is free of contamination are to be carried out in 2025.

Experimental incineration plant (VVA)

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI

In 2002, the PSI ceased operation of the experimental incineration plant. In the following years, the incinerator and the three flue gas filters were successfully dismantled. Since 2025, detailed planning and preliminary investigations have been carried out for the upcoming building clearance measurement.
