In 1993, HSK (the predecessor of ENSI) set up an automatic dose-rate monitoring network (MADUK) in the vicinity of nuclear facilities. MADUK consists of four subsidiary networks located within a radius of 6 kilometres of each Swiss nuclear power plant and the Paul Scherrer Institute; each has 12 to 17 sensors.
In 2024, Swiss nuclear installations met all legal radiation protection limits according to ENSI’s annual radiation protection report. Based on a closely coordinated system of monitoring instruments, ENSI was able to verify that the regulated parties fulfilled their legal obligations to protect both personnel and the general public from radiation.
ENSI has upgraded its MADUK web application. The MADUK monitoring network is used to monitor the radioactivity around nuclear power plants and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).
