  • Waste treatment

In Switzerland, radioactive waste is produced during power production and also, to a lesser extent, by medical applications, in industry and during research.

  • Technical Safety Forum

A Technical Safety Forum has been set up and is chaired by ENSI under the auspices of the sectoral plan. Its main purposes are to receive, discuss and answer questions from the public about technical safety aspects. These questions may be submitted by members of the public, communes, regions containing sites, organisations, cantons and communities…

  • FORGE

FORGE, Fate of Repository Gases: Because of corrosion processes or due to the metabolism of microbes that are present, the metals and organic substances stored in a deep geological repository produce gases such as hydrogen and methane in the storage galleries.

  • Summary of Evaluations

ENSI reviewed the 6 siting areas proposed by NAGRA for low and intermediate level waste (L+ILW) and the 3 siting areas proposed for high level waste (HLW). ENSI considered all siting areas to be suitable and recommended that all should be considered further in Stage 2 of the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories.

  • Additional information

Stage 3: Site selection and the general licence procedure (as per Sectoral Plan – Deep Geological Repositories) In-depth investigation of sites Before a site can be selected for inclusion in an application for a general licence, the waste producers must expand the geological data for the sites selected at the end of Stage 2. The…

  • Stage 3

As part of Stage 3 and in order to facilitate a full comparison of the relevant safety of each site, the remaining sites are the subject of detailed investigation. Geological data is expanded – if necessary by further geological studies.

  • More information

Investigation of geological siting areas and specification for repositories Communes in the siting areas assume responsibility for organising and carrying out regional participation at the latest during Stage 2.  During the regional participation process, the communes represent regional interests and work in cooperation with federal authorities and waste producers.

  • Stage 2

In Stage 2, waste producers identify potential locations within the siting areas approved in Stage 1. They are required to take account of safety and technical feasibility, spatial planning requirements and economic/socio-economic aspects. Waste producers are required to select two sites for each type of repository for inclusion in the Sectoral Plan as an interim…

  • Stage 1

NSI completed a detailed review of the geological siting areas put forward by Nagra for the storage of low and intermediate-level waste (L+ILW repository) and high-level waste (HLW repository). Below is a summary of ENSI’s response to the questions contained in the Conceptual Part of the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories.
