Hans Wanner (1955) studied chemistry at ETH Zurich and obtained his PhD in 1984. Following a research assignment at the Paul Scherrer Institute where he developed models for chemical processes in a deep geological repository, he joined the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the OECD in Paris in 1986. He worked on the development of the international Thermochemical Database and quality standards for the verification of data by international experts. He coordinated this project during 6 years.
On his return to Switzerland, he joined MBT Environmental Engineering Ltd. and managed projects in the field of deep geological disposal.
In 1995, Hans Wanner joined the Swiss nuclear safety authority HSK as a geochemist in the geological disposal section. In 2007, he was appointed Director of the Transport and Waste Management Safety Division, and in 2010 Director General of ENSI.
In November 2011, Hans Wanner was nominated Chairman of WENRA, the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association. He was Chairman until 2019.
