Submission of Swiss report on radioactive waste and spent fuel elements

ENSI, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, has submitted the sixth Swiss national report to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (Joint Convention for short). The report will be presented at the review meeting in Vienna between 21 May and 1 June 2018 and reviewed by representatives of the contracting parties.

The parties to the Joint Convention are required to submit national reports explaining how they manage spent fuel elements and radioactive waste. The national reports are presented at the review meeting and reviewed by representatives of the contracting parties.

ENSI covers the following topics in its sixth national report under the auspices of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management:

  • radioactive waste in interim storage facilities,
  • the status of the site selection process for deep geological repositories and the three proposed sites North-East Zurich, Eastern Jura and the Nördlich Lägern region respectively,
  • decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
