Detailed exchange with the Polish Nuclear Regulatory Authority

A high-ranking delegation from the Polish Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PAA) visited Switzerland from 17 to 19 November 2025. The programme included an exchange of experiences on regulatory activities, safety culture, research and deep geological disposal of radioactive waste.

From Warsaw to Brugg (AG), via St-Ursanne (JU) to Stadel (ZH) and back to Warsaw. The three-day visit by the Państwowa Agencja Atomistyki (PAA) to Switzerland took place in mid-November 2025 and began at ENSI in Brugg. There, the two nuclear regulatory authorities exchanged views on their regulatory activities, including inspections and safety culture. At the Mont Terri rock laboratory in St-Ursanne, ENSI also explained the research being conducted in connection with the deep geological repository and the Swiss approach to radioactive waste disposal. The visit to the possible site in Stadel for the construction of a deep repository for Switzerland’s radioactive waste and the presentation of Nagra’s construction project in the presence of a representative of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy rounded off the three-day visit by the Polish nuclear regulatory authority PAA.

The exchange took place within the framework of the Polish nuclear power plant programme and in preparation for the imminent start of the licensing process for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The Polish regulatory authority already visited ENSI with a delegation in 2017, after the two authorities had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in 2016.

«We value our close cooperation and look forward to further expanding this partnership,» said Marc Kenzelmann, Director of ENSI. Andrzej Głowacki, President of the PAA, added: «We consider international cooperation to be a very important tool for strengthening the PAA’s expertise. The visit to Switzerland and the discussions with colleagues from the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) serve to expand the knowledge and practical skills of our employees.»
