Earthquakes

Swiss nuclear power plants (NPPs) are amongst the most earthquake-proof structures in Switzerland. They have been designed, built and upgraded so that they can withstand even strong earthquakes. Their safety is subject to constant checking using state-of-the-art analysis methods. To comply with an ENSI requirement, the nuclear power plant operators carried out a thorough investigation into the seismic hazard at the NPP sites from 2001 to 2004 within the scope of the PEGASOS (German acronym for «probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for Swiss nuclear power plant sites») project.

Leibstadt and Beznau nuclear power plants can withstand infrequent severe earthquakes

Both Leibstadt and Beznau nuclear power plants have shown that, in the event of or after a very severe earthquake, they can ensure that their reactors are stable and safe. Dose values of one or 100 millisievert which have to be complied with will not be exceeded even after earthquakes that are only to be…

All Swiss nuclear power plants comply with the updated earthquake safety standards

For the second time since the Fukushima accident in 2011, power plant operators have demonstrated that their plants are capable of withstanding an extremely rare, severe earthquake. The safety case for a flood caused by an earthquake has also been checked. The findings from the safety proofs generated in the aftermath of Fukushima have been…

ENSI’s assessment of earthquake safety at the Beznau nuclear power plant ruled correctly

The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate assessed the earthquake safety of the Beznau nuclear power plant in accordance with the legal requirements. The Swiss Federal Administrative Court has thus rejected an appeal lodged by 15 individuals.

Updated seismic hazard assumptions require new safety cases to be drawn up for Swiss nuclear power plants

The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI has set out new requirements for assessing seismic hazards in Swiss nuclear power plants in the light of the latest scientific findings. Plant operators are required to provide further proof, in three stages, by the end of 2020, that their plants can withstand even an extremely unlikely powerful…
