Dr. Marc Kenzelmann

Director General

Marc Kenzelmann studied biology at the University of Fribourg and received his doctorate in 1999 from the University of Bern’s Institute of Medical Microbiology (now the Institute of Infectious Diseases). After several years of research at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, he moved to the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) in 2007. Here he worked until 2013 as Head of the National NBC Protection Office in the Spiez Laboratory. Marc Kenzelmann is a retired colonel and was head of NBC in the army’s logistics base from 2012 to 2020. He is an active member of the Association of Swiss NBC Specialists (ABC SUISSE) and has been a board member of the Bern Section of ABC SUISSE since 2013.

From 2013 to mid-2020, as Vice Director General, he headed the Oversight and Safety Department in the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, SFOE. In this role, Marc Kenzelmann was responsible for risk management, the oversight and safety culture, and national nuclear material controls as well as for duties arising from Switzerland’s international obligations in this area. The department is also responsible for the Scientific Secretariat of the Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC). In addition, the department oversees Swiss dams, pipelines for gas and oil, the Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations (ESTI) and financial policy instruments such as the decommissioning and disposal fund and the grid surcharge fund.

Marc Kenzelmann has been ENSI Director General since 1 July 2020.
