Martin Zimmermann studied physics at ETH Zurich. From 1980 to 2016 he worked in various roles at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in the field of nuclear energy and safety, from 2008 in a management role at both laboratory and division level. He has been and is still active in various committees and participated as an expert in several missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
From 1994 to 2008 he was head of the STARS project (Safety Research in Relation to Transient Analysis for the Reactors in Switzerland), which investigated various aspects of reactor safety on behalf of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI). Martin Zimmermann took retirement in 2016.
Anne Eckhardt, President of the ENSI Board, is delighted with the appointment, “In Martin Zimmermann, the ENSI Board is being strengthened by a well-known nuclear expert.” He will take up his office in the independent supervisory body of the nuclear supervisory authority ENSI on 01 April 2017.
