Lucens

The first first purely Swiss nuclear power plant was built in a solid rock cavern in Lucens VD. The experimental nuclear power plant Lucens enjoyed lots of initial interest from government, research institutions and industry. It was intended to pave the way for nuclear energy “made in Switzerland” and its associated technical progress. On 21 January 1969, however, when it was about to become operational, a major reactor accident occurred on Swiss soil.
